Domain: lawncareplanner.com

Tech stack: Ruby, Rails, Postgres

Hosting: Railway

What is it?

Lawn Care Planner is a lawn care scheduling web app + programmatic SEO site.

Any visitor can input their zipcode, grass type and yard size and it will generate a custom lawn care plan based on weather, grass and size.

In addition there are over 2.8 million pages of programmatically generated pages of lawn care plans based on city, state, zipcode and grass type and “activity” (mowing, aeration, fertilization, etc).

Revenue

I purchased the site in September 2023 for $1750. At that time it was making around $20/month from ads + Amazon affiliate program.

It’s very much a seasonal site (as folks aren’t cutting their grass in the middle of winter) and I rebuilt/relaunched the site right at the end of the season.

In September/October it made about $60 and then has averaged around $15-20 each month since from Amazon Affiliate + Google AdSense.

Expenses

Currently it’s hosted on Railway for ~$50/mo. I’d highly recommend moving to Hatchbox-managed with Hetzner + DigitalOcean as you’d be able to cut costs down to more like $20/mo…maybe even less. Railway is just a pretty inefficient place to host Rails apps.

The AI chatbot is managed through Pickaxe and is $20/mo.

Product improvements

This is very much an SEO play so spending time optimizing pages, making more and more of them unique, adding new content, working on backlinks…all of the classic SEO moves.

There’s a simple “Lawn Care Planner AI” tool that uses a 3rd-party app to facilitate asking the AI questions about lawn care. Could be interesting to lean in to that and expand it or make it a native part of the tool. Since the AI tool was added, it’s been asked ~3,000 questions by users.

Right now the site is also US-focused. Expanding to other countries would likely be impactful.

Growth goals

These sort of content sites are generally pretty long plays as you can’t just go sign up a bunch of new customers. Things can just take longer to grow.

These are what average monthly revenue should be (keeping in mind that the site is seasonal).

2024: $250

2025: $500

2026: $1,000

2027: $2,000

2028+: Growing at roughly 10% annually

$10,000 — The benefit of this is you don’t need to pay out any % of revenue or future acquisition plus no growth goals that trigger me getting the project back.
